We apply youth action and community-based participatory research approaches to understand how fisheries scarcity impacts social-ecological well-being in small-scale fishing villages. Through PhotoVoice, interviews, focus groups, and surveys, we explore strengths, changes, challenges, conflicts, and potential solutions with SSF communities.

We are particularly interested in how formal and non-formal education in artisanal fishing communities can address the association with nature and developmental needs of young people in the context of aging, depleting fisheries, a rapidly changing climate, and an industrializing planet. Through this research, we seek to support young people in taking on meaningful roles in decision-making alongside supportive, caring adults and non-humans to nurture well-being.

Too Big to Ignore (TBTI) is a global research network and knowledge mobilization partnership that focuses on addressing issues and concerns that affect the viability and sustainability of small-scale fisheries. Coast 2 Coast is collaborating with TBTI Global to develop a hub in Peru for SSF researchers, rightsholders, students, nonprofits in fishing communities, large foundations, and other SSF advocates to come together to support SSF as solutions!
